Cake Ideas

So far we have two viable cake ideas. Both would involve edible rice paper being applied to fondant, or something like that, as described by Mary Alice in this clip about a postcard cake.

At any rate, The first idea involves buttons. Essentially covering the cake in images of old feminist and gay buttons. Lauren likes this idea because its punk rock, but I'm not too excited because it's just so . . . cheerful.

The second idea involves wrapping a quote, excerpted below, from the Goodridge vs. Massachusetts Depertment of Public Health decision around the cake. The quote reads, "Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. "It is an association that promotes a way of life, not causes; a harmony in living, not political faiths; a bilateral loyalty, not commercial or social projects." Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479, 486 (1965). Because it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life's momentous acts of self-definition."

I also like this idea because it has a classic and simple aesthetic. I love the idea of text as art. Check out this exhibit from the National Museum of Women in the Arts and be sure to click on the interactive page turner to get an idea of how artful books and words can be. And then, there is the quote. Although its about the eminently apolitical nature of marriage, the fact that it is an excerpt from a ground-breaking legal decision acknowledges the forces that make it such and our efforts to ixnay them.

Essentially, the difference between my preference and hers can be summarized as wedding cake and groomscake -- I want the pretty classic and she wants the crazy. What ever we do, it will be with a little help from my friend Mary Alice who is probably as good at mediating engaged couples as she is at cake. Although her bakery will be closed next August, she has promised that she I can roll around the shop and use their cutting edge pastry technology to slap together something real nice for my little Dingmoonment.

Either idea works for me, but I guess I'm just TOO traditional. I really don't care what message the cake carries, I just want it to taste really really good. I love cake. Chocolate, coconut, carrot cake, red velvet cake- MMMMMMM - the possibilities are endless.
