Happy Memorial Day

So, maybe ten years ago, my dad started taking up an interest in motorcyles. He got his motorcycle license, bought one, and joined a motorcycle club -- The Sober Tramps. I was really tickled by this strange new development, to see that he was making friends, developing interests, exploring the world. He was finally blossoming after having been a drug addict for thirty years. I mean, even after he got sober, during my teen years, his life was just work, meetings and sleep, work, meetings and sleep. Socializing is hard, for a lot of reasons, for people in recovery.

So anyway, as part of this strange new motorcycle development, he started doing Rolling Thunder. He wasnt a veteran; From what I understand, he weaseled his way out of service in Vietnam by claiming a bum leg or elbow or something. He probably just went as a member of his club. At any rate, he bought a cuddly for his dog, Shadow, so he could ride the motorcycle with him. With a Pomeranian snuggled between his chest and leather jacket, my dad was, according to all reports, a real crowd pleaser rolling down the streets of DC. So, I'm remembering him very much this Memorial Day, but not for the reasons that most people remember people today.

Happy Memorial Day to our service members and veterans, and their families. And to anyone, really, fighting any kind of war.
